Five minutes walk from Ponsonby Road with off-street parking directly in front, this ground floor apartment has been freshly set up to suit visitors who want to be at the heart of Auckland's best-loved shopping and dining district or who need a base to work from on a business trip.
It's a peaceful, self-contained, non-smoking space below the owner's own home with its own entry, an en suite bathroom, a large desk, a fridge and tea or coffee making facilities.
The studio is a private space of 25sqm comprising an open plan bedroom, seating area with comfortable armchairs, a desk and working area with a mini-fridge, kettle, cutlery, cups, glasses, plates and bowls. Behind a smoked glass door is a bathroom with a shower, toilet, basin and cupboards.
You will have a very comfortable queen-sized bed and 100 per cent cotton bedlinen. There's a remote controlled fan for humid summer nights or a heater when the weather turns chilly.
Guests will have an individual door code to access the studio via a keypad and, if you're bringing a car, an off-street parking space directly in front of the private entrance. (Please note that between January 3 and March 25, 2024, the car parking space will be used by guests in the main house, unless otherwise arranged.) There is free on-street parking all weekend and on weekdays between 6pm and 8am for up to two hours. Please let us know if that creates issues and we can look at options.
I live in the main house upstairs and am normally available to help with anything you might need to make your stay easier. You can contact me at any time through the AirBnB app. In the event that I am away from Auckland I have a co-hosting management company to look after my guests.
Our home, where we have lived since the 1990s, is in a heritage area of traditional wooden villas dating back to the early part of the 20th century, when colonial New Zealand and its cities expanded rapidly. They are largely built of native kauri timber, unthinkable in 2023 when kauri are themselves cherished as landmarks of the forest. The area of Grey Lynn has changed progressively over the last century from initially housing largely manual workers and their families to then being a mostly Polynesian neighbourhood, then a home for artists, writers and media people, holding off the insurgent lawyers and architects. There are still some Tongan and Samoan churches nearby where you can hear beautiful singing on a Sunday morning.
Within a few minutes walk of the studio you will find a host of art galleries, yoga studios, designer boutiques and vintage clothes shops, delicious and innovative cafes and restaurants for any taste and budget, eclectic homeware stores, an arthouse cinema and even what I think is the first kombucha bar in the country.
Just around the corner is Grey Lynn park and a little further, maybe 30 minutes on foot, you can be sunbathing on one of several idyllic little inner city beaches, swimming in sight of the harbour bridge and next to the mansions which house many of the country's rich and famous. Walk the other way and you can reach the CBD within 20 minutes and a little further on you'll be at the ferry terminal, the gateway to the many fascinating and stunning islands of the Hauraki Gulf, including gorgeous Waiheke Island, the sleeping volcano Rangitoto and the fabulous bird sanctuary that is Tiritiri Matangi, all of which are highly recommended.
Everything in the Grey Lynn and Ponsonby area is easily accessible on foot from the studio and you can walk the the CBD downtown comfortably within half an hour. A lot of younger people choose to use electric scooters to get around inner Auckland or for the more cautious there are Uber cars moments away day and night.
Guests are provided with a variety of tea, coffee and milk as requested.
