The Quare Place is a detached holiday house sleeping 10 in the popular seaside village of Southerness on Scotland's Solway Coast, just steps away from the fabulous sandy beach and close to all the attractions and facilities that the local area offers to holidaymakers.
The spacious house is equipped to the highest of standards and is a perfect base for family and group holidays, the two sitting rooms mean that if peace and quiet is needed then there is space for all. The First floor sitting room(with Doulbe sofa bed) has spectacular views across the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian Hills and the enclosed garden with outside seating makes for a perfect spot for outside dining in the summer time.
Southerness is a popular seaside village and has two pubs, a village store, a leisure centre with a pool, two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748 which is occasionally open to the public.
While you may just want to enjoy the peace of watching the changing colours of the Solway from the sitting room there is plenty in the area to entice you outside with the Southerness Links golf course within walking distance and the RSPB Mersehead Reserve is just a few miles further along the coast. The Reserve is spectacular in winter and spring with thousands of geese and other over-wintering wildfowl. In summer there are delightful walks down to the beach. The RSPB staff run wildlife events throughout the year, including dawn walks, pond dipping and badger watching. Beyond Mersehead, you come to the picturesque villages of Rockcliffe and Kippford, with more coastal walks, sailing, pubs and teashops. Away from the coast, there are Forestry Commission woodland trails and cycling is well catered for, particularly with the 7 Stanes Mountain Bike Routes, the closest of these being at Dalbeattie and Mabie Forest.
If you are more interested in history, there are numerous sites to explore, including the nearby John Paul Jones Cottage, being the birthplace of the founder of the American Navy. In New Abbey, there are the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey with it's connections to Oxfords's Balliol College and one of the country’s oldest Corn Mills (both maintained by Historic Scotland). Dumfries boasts the world’s oldest Camera Obscura at its Museum. Connections with Robert Burns can be explored throughout Dumfries and at Ellisland Farm, Holywood just north of Dumfries where Burns lived and wrote for a number of years. In the opposite direction, lie Dalbeattie with two curiosities, its private Museum and Buittle Tower, then Castle Douglas with Threave Castle and Threave Gardens, and then Kirkcudbright with Broughton House, the Stewartry Museum and numerous art galleries. Beyond Kirkcudbright there are further gardens benefiting from this area’s mild local climate, including Cally Gardens and the Logan Botanic Garden.
