One of the most notable architectural homes anywhere - Desert Courtyard House. A decade in the making, painstakingly crafted by master artisans, the home is an interplay of solids and voids, technology and design, surprise and awe.
Located on a lush slope, embraced by two natural washes and indigenous desert flora, studded with towering Saguaro cacti, the home first presents itself as a solemn monument of massive masonry and weathering steel.
The space
Inside, its three dimensional spiral U-shape opens like a hewn gemstone revealing a crystalline core. All natural materials flow harmoniously throughout: rammed earth, burnished steel, lacquered wood and towering walls of glass surrounding the desert oasis courtyard.
Passing through the temple-like entrance, mature mesquite trees in the courtyard ushers you up a gentle ramp, your eyes guided up to the grand living space and out to the patio and spectacular Arizona mountain sunset beyond.
Pivoting glass walls open to an outdoor seating area wrapped around Arrow Rock, which stands as it did before the home existed, warmed by an exuberant fire on cool desert nights. The stainless-steel and leather wrapped kitchen blends into the palatial dining table and up to a bird-beak drop ceiling studded with starry lights.
The master suite is accessed through a signature steel telescoping door. Walls of onyx glows with daylight and an origami bronze ceiling sculpts a uniquely sensual space. The pivoting shower wall that transforms the indoor shower to an outdoor private retreat is one of many inconceivable secrets of this house.
A 65-foot floating glass bridge spans the natural terrain and displays art and sculptures as it leads to the two guest suites. A suspended steel staircase winds down to a theater room and a wine lounge, while a second reveals a wellness hub for fitness, lounging, and therapeutic spa.
